June 13th, 2026 Community Scan
This June 13th was a continuation of the series of community scans that will be conducted throughout the summer.
Risk Factors
In this community scan, the risk factors remain the same, with the high number of vacant storefronts being the most prevalent.
Environmental Concerns
Adult-oriented commercial spaces outnumber youth spaces
The scan identified:
320 retail stores
259 small businesses
190 restaurants
compared with only:
8 schools
5 youth-serving places
7 playgrounds
8 parks
2 sports fields
1 library
Cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol retail visibility
11 smoke/cannabis retailers
3 licensed cannabis retailers
23 bars/nightclubs
12 liquor stores
Although open street substance sales were not observed during the scan, substances remains visible through storefront retail. This suggests that normalization may occur through environmental exposure rather than illicit street activity. Thec in combination with the adult
Protective Factors
Community Strengths:
Strong local economy and community activity
Strong network of community resources
Chinatown has a well-established network of organizations and businesses capable of supporting prevention, education, and health initiatives. The challenge may not be the absence of services but ensuring youth and families are aware of them and feel comfortable accessing them.
