This June 13th was a continuation of the series of community scans that will be conducted throughout the summer.

Risk Factors

In this community scan, the risk factors remain the same, with the high number of vacant storefronts being the most prevalent.

Environmental Concerns

  • Adult-oriented commercial spaces outnumber youth spaces

    • The scan identified:

      • 320 retail stores

      • 259 small businesses

      • 190 restaurants

      compared with only:

      • 8 schools

      • 5 youth-serving places

      • 7 playgrounds

      • 8 parks

      • 2 sports fields

      • 1 library

  • Cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol retail visibility

    • 11 smoke/cannabis retailers

    • 3 licensed cannabis retailers

    • 23 bars/nightclubs

    • 12 liquor stores

Although open street substance sales were not observed during the scan, substances remains visible through storefront retail. This suggests that normalization may occur through environmental exposure rather than illicit street activity. Thec in combination with the adult

Community Strengths:

Chinatown has a well-established network of organizations and businesses capable of supporting prevention, education, and health initiatives. The challenge may not be the absence of services but ensuring youth and families are aware of them and feel comfortable accessing them.
