Data That
Tells Our Story

National and statewide data are important. for identifying broad trends, but they often fail to accurately reflect the experiences of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities at the local level. Many national surveys aggregate all Asian populations into a single racial category, masking major differences between ethnic subgroups, neighborhoods, immigration histories, languages, and cultural contexts. As a result, important disparities and emerging issues may remain hidden.

Collecting local data is important because for AANHPI communities, it can also help address longstanding underrepresentation in substance use research and treatment systems.
