Cannabis (Marijuana)

Cannabis plant

Cannabis use among youth has become an important public health concern as legalization expands and social norms around cannabis continue to shift. During adolescence, the brain is still developing, particularly the areas responsible for memory, attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation. Research shows that early and frequent cannabis use may affect these developmental processes, potentially leading to difficulties with concentration, learning, and academic performance. Some young people may also experience increased anxiety, mood changes, or challenges with motivation.

In communities where cannabis use is becoming more normalized and youth are getting more acculturated, youth may face greater exposure through peers, social media, and retail environments which can influence perceptions of risk. Prevention efforts that focus on education, open communication between youth and their families, and culturally responsive community support can help young people make informed decisions and build protective factors that support health development.
